Doping is a major problem in sporting competition, both at national and international levels. Not only physical, but also psychological and social consequences are to be expected. Steroids taken in pill form or via IV go into your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Sometimes, that’s necessary, such as when treating flare-ups of autoimmune diseases that affect several parts of your body — such drug addiction treatment as multiple sclerosis. But doctors prefer steroid injections whenever possible, as they deliver steroid medication right where it needs to go.

We have found 9 studies from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom since the year 2000 that provide at least some data on age of onset of AAS use. These included 6 studies that evaluated AAS users in person and 3 Internet surveys of AAS users (19). PED use typically begins after the teenage years and therefore evades scrutiny of parents or high school teachers.
How do steroids work?
Corticosteroids are fast-acting in the body, which makes them useful for treating sudden, severe symptoms. Coe, who has been a strong defender of the IAAF's record, has pledged to set up an independent anti-doping agency for the sport, admitting there is a perception that in-house drug-testing creates "conflicts" and "loopholes". Brought in by Wada in 2009, the passport aims to reveal the effects of doping rather than detect the substance or method itself. Some by-products of doping substances are so small they may not produce a strong enough signal for detection. Each substance the sample contains has a unique "fingerprint" and as the scientists already know the weight of many steroids, for example, they are able to rapidly detect doping. Other side-effects include baldness and low sperm count for men, and increased facial hair and deepened voices for women.

Vectors and health risks
Moreover, the interference of most diuretics with uric acid metabolism can cause a gout attack, which can be very painful (Koutlianos and Kouidi, 2006). By extracting water from intracellular compartments, osmotic diuretics expand the extracellular fluid volume, decrease blood viscosity and inhibit renin release. This results in an increase of the urinary excretion of all electrolytes, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3- and PO43−. Because osmotic diuretics extract water from the eye and brain, they are all used to control intraocular pressure during acute attacks of glaucoma and in ocular surgery.

Muscle cells are factories that take the raw materials, oxygen and glucose, and turn them into energy. Training increases the ability of the body to deliver oxygen to the cells and increases muscle size. Increasing the number of red blood cells in the body increases the ability to deliver oxygen to tissues and that's where blood doping and EPO come in. Therefore, most of the information is anecdotal, and these reports are often confounded by concurrent use of other PEDs, especially AASs. The likely adverse effects include edema, excessive sweating, myalgias and arthralgias, carpal tunnel syndrome, and diabetes (Table 2).
